Over the weekend, Ray asked about dome hinges. I've been installing my side panel ones and used the Robart types we mass bought through Jerry. Modified them to mount the hinge near the top of the panel so the panel edge doesn't hit the dome when open. Also wanted to use them in pairs for strength and a better look. Here are some pics and explanations:

Dome Hinges BR01p - Side view showing the area cut out to clear the dome.

Dome Hinges BR02p - Top view showing the area cut out to butt the 2 halves together. Strips of 1/16" alum were JB'ed to bridge the two halves for both the moving and fixed parts.

Dome Hinges BR03p - Outside view of mounted hinges in Side Panels 1-3. 2-56 flat head screws will be JB'ed to the inner dome.

Dome Hinges BR05p - Outside view of mounted hinge in Side Panel 4. The alum strip was curved to clear the top edge of the dome cutout. Will add a 2nd strip to fill gap between hinges.

See pic for cutting the dome. Bottom line is where i want the panel. Then i cut back 2 small areas to give a similar edge distance to that of the lower doors, to allow the hinge to open enough. I could have done the whole opening, but want to keep as much strength as possible and thought it looked OK. Will sand off the pen when i have it apart.

Yet to attach them properly. But will just mark the position inside the dome then glue in place, separate layers, drill through the inner dome and countersink, a pair of 4-40 nuts and countersunk screws and we're done.

As an extra note, my panel doors will only be the outer layer and just an off cut of the inner used as a pad to glue the door to.

Good luck, but if you havent started the JAG hinges will be worth the wait, there is just a silly amount of work to get these almost right.
